A midlife crisis can hit us like a brick or it can creep up on us. However it happens, when it happens, your world can turn upside down. You may notice that your sleep is affected, your relationships suffer and you may become more dependent on social and recreational stimulants.

You will have lived to a greater or lesser degree, adapting your persona to fit in with certain expectations of others. Parenthood, employability, decision making, financial and social status, all contribute to you creating your outward facing 'self'. This adaptability comes under the spotlight as you start to question whether this is who you really are, and whether this aligns with how you really feel deep inside.

We have all heard people say things like, "She's acting like a teenager!" or "I thought he liked his life as it was, he's taken leave of his senses!" Of course not everyone behaves in the same way, but you get the idea? We can appear to derail when we start to challenge and reject our societal and cultural demands.

All that is really happening is an awakening desire to explore new external sources in an attempt to create a new way forward. These external sources aren't aways reliable though and quite often the outcome isn't what was intended. Your new persona can be vulnerable and open for being exploited.
